Dave Lovell

I started my trials riding in the 70s initially just entering local events, then after a trip to watch the Scottish Six Day Trial I tried to up my riding, regularly entering national events including the Manx 2 Day, GP Lakes 2 Day … 10 years later in 1989 I entered my first SSDT which proved to be one of the wettest on record!!

At 53, had to say that’s my last one! I took over running the Wrexham MC for a couple of decades and was also chairman of Cheshire Centre ACU Trials Committee. In my 40s I won the Cheshire Centre Over 40 championship for a number of years.

In latter years have taken up classic trials which has given me further enthusiasm for the sport along with building bikes to ride using my engineering background, and now I’m starting a new adventure setting up a new club with two other great enthusiastic guys!

Jim Droughton

I’ve been riding bikes a long time having been influenced by my dad. I got into trials riding in the early 2000s at Frodsham Trials Club but then progressed to classic Yamaha Majestys, riding the Nostalgia Trial and various North Wales club events.

I started doing the KIA Nationals and first did the Manx 2 Day in 2018 – camping at Castletown in the rain! I’ve since done several more Manx 2 Days and last year entered the Scottish Pre-65 Trial on a rigid Excelsior – not for the faint-hearted!

First bike, Bantam D4 125, 1974

My first trial was in February 1977 on a BSA Bantam D14/4 175cc. An early highlight – Cheshire Centre youth B & A class champion. In 1982 I entered my first Scottish Six Day Trial, aged 17 riding a 280 Gori, yes we did actually ride them!

Diversifying in 1987 – I won the expert enduro E2 champion then in 1988, silver medal ISDE in France.

In the early 90’s I was Midland Centre trials champion then in 1997, I think, I came 28th overall in the SSDT.

My biggest joy was riding the 2003 SSDT with my son Tom, it doesn’t get better … I have done 33 SSDT’s and this year will be my 40th Lomax trial.

My son Tom is a successful trials & enduro rider – this is great but he and I enjoy a mess about with a few old bikes more than anything. Building an old nail into something that can be trialed is a passion; being good on a bike is OK but to enjoy riding your bike is a pleasure and what all this is about.
